BENEFITS OF GROUP THERAPY
Through participation in Group Therapy Sessions, you will find a forum of peer support and gain strength as members share feelings and experiences. You will feel comfortable with others who are facing similar difficulties and who understand. You will gain strength in seeing the resourcefulness of those in the same situation, and have the opportunity to renew feelings of self-worth through assisting others. During the group process, you will develop a support network and gain a greater sense of normalcy.
Group therapy provides you with unique feedback from other people. Getting different perspectives is always helpful in promoting growth and change. By seeing how others handle similar problems, you can rapidly add new coping strategies to your interactions, giving you a variety of perspectives on what seems to work and when.
Since so many of your daily interactions are with other people, you will learn to improve your social skills in group therapy, even though this may not be the main focus of the group. The Psychotherapist who will lead your group will help you to communicate more clearly and effectively with others. This results in new social skills which can generalize and be used in relationships outside of the group.
Unlike individual therapy sessions, Group Therapy offers participants the important opportunity to interact with others with similar issues in a safe, supportive environment. Participants can try out new behaviors, role play difficult situations, and interact directlywith othermembers. With the assistance of the Therapist, members receive valuable feedback and insight, but also have the oppotunity to assist others by relating personal success stories. For many people, the unique Group Therapy process produces stronger and longer-lasting results than other types of psychotherapy.
